Main Research Activities
The research (as well as teaching) activities of LIPOF concern the application of forensic odontology and anthropology methodologies for the personal attribution of skeletal remains, analysis and definition of the biological profile of human remains, carbonized human remains, ancient human remains, Disaster Victim Identification, Migrant Disaster Victim Identification. Integral parts of the technical-forensic analyses and assessments are the determination of chronological age through dental methods, the application of new technologies as an aid in instrumental surveys, in the interpretation and archiving of data for identification purposes.
The laboratory provides humanitarian forensic odontology services for the promotion and protection of human rights in the field of: forensic human identification; age estimation; reconstruction of the biological profile. Among the technical-forensic activities, those aimed at unaccompanied foreign minors, unidentified bodies and associations of Missing Persons, Victims of trafficking and torture, Cultural Heritage Superintendencies.
LIPOF also provides remote consultations through the virdentopsy process in collaboration with other foreign universities and international associations.
Finally, LIPOF carries out awareness-raising and public engagement activities in the field of research and identification of missing persons. Among those in progress, the iDENTIfyme campaign and the identification kit for children/adolescents.
