Research Activities
The research activities of the Laboratory of Pathogenesis of Viral Infections include different aspects of the pathogenesis of dsDNA viruses, focusing on human Herpesviruses, such as human cytomegalovirus (HCMV or HHV-5), herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1), and herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2), and human Papillomaviruses (HPVs). The main topics can be summarized as follows: i) screening of new compounds with antiviral properties against HCMV, HSV-1, and HSV-2; ii) analysis of immunomodulatory mechanisms of herpesviruses, their interplay with viral DNA sensors and restriction factors, viral evasion strategies, impact on metabolic pathways, and post-translational modifications; iii) HPV role on tumorigenesis; iv) impact of the IFN-inducible protein IFI16 on viral infections and on the pathogenesis of autoimmune as well as inflammatory diseases (in collaboration with CAAD Center, University of Eastern Piedmont- UPO).
